High-functioning anxiety

High-functioning anxiety describes appearing capable, organised and successful on the outside while feeling tense, restless, over-responsible or unable to switch off on the inside. It is not a formal diagnosis, but it names a real pattern of hidden anxiety powering visible achievement — common in deep-feeling, high-achieving women.

In plain language

Its signature is being rewarded for your symptoms: the over-preparing gets called diligence, the vigilance gets called attention to detail. Which is why it can run for years before anyone — including you — calls it anxiety.

What it can look like

  • Over-preparing for everything and still feeling unready.
  • Praise evaporates in minutes; criticism echoes for weeks.
  • Calm in every crisis, wired at 2am.
